Step 1
1. Spherical power (Sph).
Everybody has one. If the spherical power has a minus above the power, then this prescription will help you with your distance vision. If the spherical power has a plus sign above it, it will help magnify your vision.
2. Cyl and Axis
The second part is for astigmatism. Before you ask – it is perfectly normal to have astigmatism. Everyone thinks their eyes are round and the centre of the eye is in the … well … centre of the eye. In an extreme situation this is true. Not when you have an astigmatism.
3. Near and Intermediate Adds.
This is extra power needed to help you read without extending your arms or to see into the intermediate – looking at your computer screen for example. This is always a plus number.
4. Recall
This is when you should have your next sight test. It is also a use by date for the prescription.
