Frames

Step 3

Metal Frames

There are many advantages to metal frames. They can be discrete and light. Most metal frames have nose pads. Widening the nose pads can make a frame comfier on your nose. Bringing the nose pads closer together can be used to stop a frame slipping. From a varifocal perspective, nose pads can be adjusted to ensure you are getting the best use of the lens.

Aesthetically metal frames can be the slimmest. If you want a discreet look you can get slim sides and fronts. If you get a colour that suits your skin tone, some rimless frames can look as if there is nothing there. Not all metal frames are like that. There are some with thicker sides, bling and with designs on them.

There are some disadvantages to metal frames. If your prescription is high and the lens is not thinned down, the thickness will be shown – definitely on the back, but sometimes on the front. A thick lens will also put pressure on the frame. This may cause the screws holding the front together to loosen. The combination of the lens’ weight and the loosened screw allows the lens to drop out. If you don’t like the feel of nose pads on your face, you may decide against metal frames. If the nose pads are not positioned correctly, this can cause red marks on your nose.

Frame materials

Plastic Frames

If your glasses are going to have a rough and tumble life, then plastic is for you. It will be less likely to warp than metal and can take additional pressure. Plastic frames are also good for withstanding young children grabbing them.

If you want the world to see your glasses – then plastic is for you. They are bold – even the thinner ones and often have thicker sides. Plastic frames are good if you have a thick lens. The thick eyepieces will hide lens thickness at the front and the thicker sides will hide the lens at the back. A thick less is less likely to fall out compared to a metal frame. This is because the frame is a mould that hugs the lens – no screws to become loose. The eyepiece surrounds the lens holding it in place and the lens becomes more secured in a plastic frame than a metal one.

The main disadvantage of plastic frames is that they are moulded. The bend on the side is all that can be adjusted. If the sides are too long, they cannot be trimmed. If the nose bridge does not sit snugly on your nose, do not buy it as no adjustments can be made. From a varifocal perspective the height and angle the frame cannot be adjusted because there are no nose pads. The thick sides may also prevent adjustments at the joint.

Does Your Skin React To Some Metals – Hypoallergenic Materials

You know if you need hypoallergenic frames – you’re skin will react to cheap jewellery (or a cheap other half).

Most metal frames are made of a nickel alloy. If your skin reacts to cheep jewellery, it will react to nickel alloy frames. If you still want a metal frames then stainless steel and titanium frames are the best to go for. If you don’t want to go for metal then plastic is another alternative. If you’re feeling a bit flush you can get gold frames (maybe your skin has expensive taste).

Elite Frames

If you really want to spend some cash you can get really expensive frames. Platinum and Gold frames are available. One advantage of gold as a material is that it does not corrode easily. This means a gold frame can last you a lifetime and still be used as a family heirloom. A disadvantage of gold is that it is easily bent and could be a costly mistake if you sit on the frame.

Horn and wood frames may not suit everyone’s ethics. These materials are taken directly from animals and trees to create the frames.

Some frames have a lot of bling - proper bling that is. Frames can be decorated with a variety of gems and stones.
