Frames

Step 3

Frame style
The final thing you need to consider is the frame style itself. Are you really embarrassed about wearing glasses or are you wanting to scream, ‘I can see you – now.’

Supra Frames:
More commonly known as semi rimless, there is a frame at the top and the lens is held in with a cord at the bottom. This is quite good if you do a lot of reading as there is no bottom to distract your vision. The frame is also discreet - especially if you choose a colour that blends in with your skin tone. You can also have a bit more fun with the colour of the frame as the frame will not dominate your face. If your prescription is below +/- 7 you will be able to thin down the lens quite nicely. As exposed lenses look thicker than they are, extra thinning may be required. Polycarbonate lenses or extra thinned lenses is recommended to protect exposed lenses from impact. If you are over +/- 7 you may not be able to get a nice finish and the lens will look too thick.

Rimless:
If you want to go for the most discreet look, rimless is the one. There is no rim around the lens, but the lens is held in place with bolts put through the lens and attaches to the nose bridge as well as the sides. The nose bridge is the only thing seen on the front. The nose bridge and sides can be thick with detail or very slim – extremely light if it is a titanium frame. If you have a prescription below +/- 7 you will be able to thin the lens to minimise thickness. If you are over +/- 7 you will have to get a lot of thinning to the lens. Your lens may be too thick to successfully put the needed bolts through the lens. Exposed lenses also look ticker than they are.
Rimless are also vulnerable to children’s grabbing habits. This could be an expensive child bonding session.

Spring Hinge:
Spring hinges are quite good. They allow more wear and tear on the joints and screws do not loosen as quickly. These hinges are ideal for people who will take off their glasses a lot.
