Face shape

It’s time to look at your face. Please don’t get too self-conscious. All we are going to do is look at its shape. Read the descriptions below. They will give generic description of each face shape. Look in the mirror and take a note of which description suits you best. The first section will cover the subtle look. For advice on bolder looks, go to the bottom of the page.

The subtle look

Round Faces: You have a circular face – lots of curves. A rectangular frame with angles, maybe very small curves, and high set sides will blend in more. Avoid deep frames. They will look big on your face and you may feel the frame hitting off your cheeks.
Oval Faces: As with our circular faced friends you want to avoid curves in the frames. As you have a little more depth to your face, a deeper lens with low set sides would be good. Small lenses may focus attention to your glasses and make your eyes appear smaller. Best go for a squarer frame with angles or slight curves to the sides.
Square Faces: You have angles. To soften those angles you would want to go for rounder frames with high set sides. This could be a John Lennon/Harry Potter look (depending on your generation) or something oval. Avoid anything too deep as it will look big on your face.
Rectangle Faces: Like the squares it is a good to go for a rounder frames. The only difference in advice would be to go for a deeper frame with low set sides. A shallower frame will look small on your face and focus people’s attention on the frame. It may also look silly.
Heart Faces: These faces have a broad forehead, wide cheekbones and a small chin. The type of frames you would want to go for include bottom heavy frames to add width to your lower face, low set sides to draw attention down from. Semi rimless frames may not be a good idea as this will accentuate the width of your forehead. Frames with some roundness to it would give a subtler look.
Triangle Faces: These faces have a relatively narrow forehead and the face broadens out at the cheekbones. For the subtlest look, go for a top-heavy frame – semi rimless would be good – with high set sides. Shape wise, go for rounder frames to soften the angles on your face.
Diamond Faces: This isn’t a Londoner term for a good face. It means your face has a smaller forehead, wider cheekbones and a smaller chin. The frame shape that would give the subtlest effect are oval frames with low set sides. This shape would look more balanced on your face and help soften the angles of your face.
